Ugly Christmas Sweaters

Do you have a Christmas sweater that's just too ugly to wear?  If so, you might want to find it and have it dry-cleaned because you're going to want to wear it this year.  That's right! Ugly Christmas sweaters are in style now!  Everyone's wearing them.  Even stars like Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Kanye West have been seen in them!
If you want to get in on the trend but you don't have an ugly Christmas sweater in the closet, don't worry! You can buy one just about anywhere.  They're available at discount stores like Walmart, where they start at around $12, and department stores like J.C. Penny and Macy's.  Even upscale department stores like Nordstrom carry them, but they can cost up to $600 there.  And if you'd rather shop online, you can find them at the online superstore Amazon.com or the online craft shop ETSY.com.
When it comes to choosing an ugly Christmas sweater, anything goes.  The sweaters can have sayings on them; they can have sequins, beads, bells or pom-poms; they can have 3D characters, like reindeer or snowmen or Santa, on them; and they can even have LED lights sewn in.  The only rule to remember when picking out an ugly Christmas sweater is the uglier, the better.
These sweaters are so popular that people even have ugly Christmas sweater-themed parties where everyone comes wearing an ugly Christmas sweater.  At these parties, there's no pressure to dress your best.  In fact, the goal is to look as silly as possible.  When everyone is dressed badly, it makes everyone feel relaxed.  Plus, asking about someone's sweater is a great way to start a conversation.  That's the magic of the ugly Christmas sweater.

Pigeons Monitor Pollution

Pigeons are thought of as a nuisance in big cities, but now they are being used to help solve a problem – air pollution.   Air pollution in London is linked to illness and as many as 10,000 deaths per year.  But it's hard to put pressure on the government to fix a problem when most people aren't aware it exists at all.  That's why a marketing company called DigitasLBi decided to find a way to let people know just how much pollution there is.

Before they could tell people about the problem, they had to measure the amount of pollution in the air.  But they didn't know exactly how to go about collecting data from all over the city.  Drones seemed like a good idea, but it is illegal to fly them over London.  That's when someone suggested pigeons.

Pigeons have been used to deliver and bring back messages, so it's not a far-fetched idea to use them to bring back data.  So DigitasLBi got in touch with Brian Woodhouse.  Woodhouse is a member of the Royal Racing Pigeon Association, and he has worked with pigeons for about 65 years. He helped fit some of his pigeons with tiny Velcro backpacks that hold tiny pollution sensors.  The sensors, which weigh less than an ounce, can track nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and other pollutants that impact our health.

Once the pollution sensors were in place, the pigeons were released in different parts of the city.  Live readings from the Pigeon Air Patrol are sent to Londoners through Twitter.  See for yourself at @pigeonair.  Or go to www.pigeonairpatrol.com for more information about the project.

Wicca

Wicca is a religion that includes respect for nature and belief in the rights of others. Wiccans, or people who practice witchcraft, focus on the good in life and in the spirit. Their beliefs go back to ancient times, long before the arrival of Christianity, therefore there is no connection between witchcraft and the Devil.

In the 17th century, however, in the Thirteen Colonies, people thought witchcraft was evil, and the punishment for anyone found guilty of practicing this religion was hanging.  The most famous witch trials took place in and around Salem in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1692, and they are known as the Salem Witch Trials.  This terrible period in American history began when a group of young girls began behaving strangely.  Unable to explain their behavior, people assumed that the girls were being tormented by witches.  Accusations of witchcraft spread, and in all, 150 people, mostly outcasts or people who didn't follow the rules of the strict Protestant church, were accused of practicing witchcraft.  Those who were found guilty, 14 women and 5 men, were hanged.  And one man was pressed to death for refusing to cooperate with the court.

In the middle of the trials, the court was disbanded by the governor. The Superior Court of Judicature, which replaced the "witchcraft" court, did not allow spectral evidence, so those awaiting trial were released and those awaiting execution were pardoned.  In effect, the Salem Witch Trials were over.  To this day, no one knows exactly what caused the girls' strange behavior.

Cars for Kids

Kids want to have fun, and playing is important for their development.  But some kids have trouble walking and even crawling.  Since wheelchairs are not recommended for kids under three, these children's movement and social interaction are limited.  Cole Galloway, a physical therapy professor at University of Delaware, wants to make sure that all kids, even kids who have trouble moving on their own, get the chance to move around, play and explore.

That’s why Galloway partnered with Sunil Agrawal, professor of mechanical engineering at University of Delaware, and together they launched the GoBabyGo project in 2006.  They started by custom building robots to provide mobility to children with crawling and walking problems.  These customized robots were expensive, though, so during a trip to a toy store Galloway got an idea -- to modify off-the-shelf toy race cars.

These toy cars now enable kids to be part of the action at home, in the daycare center, and on the playground.  According to Galloway, making it fun is key because play unlocks brain development for the child.  Plus, if the kids can move and play like other kids, then it's more likely that other kids and adults will interact with them.  Besides, the toy cars are cool, so the kids actually become the center of attention.  The increased social interaction will provide an important boost in their cognitive development.  The kids, however, are unaware of all that.  They're too busy having fun.

Freerice

If you want to improve your English vocabulary, then you should try Freerice.   Freerice is a non-profit website and mobile app that is owned by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).  Freerice accomplishes two goals at once — the site provides useful information to anyone who uses it for free and provides rice to hungry people for free through the WFP.

How does it work?  Whenever you play an educational game on Freerice, you earn grains of rice.  You earn 10 grains of rice for every correct answer.  The more correct answers you get, the more rice you earn.  All of the rice that is earned by players around the world is then donated to the hungry.

The rice is paid for by sponsors.  To find out which sponsors are paying for the rice, all you have to do is play the game.  When you get a correct answer, you'll see a sponsor's name at the bottom of your screen.  The donated rice is purchased from the same country in which it is distributed. For instance, rice going to feed the hungry in Cambodia is purchased from farmers in Cambodia.  By purchasing locally, the WFP can not only save on the cost of shipping the rice but also support the local economy.  And that helps feed even more people.

If you aren't interested in English, you can choose another subject, like math, science, geography, or another language.   So there's no excuse not to try it!   You'll learn something, and the rice you donate will make a huge difference to the person who receives it.

Hanafuda

In 2015, the cover art of ET PEOPLE! had a hanafuda theme.  Most Japanese are familiar with these cards.  The name literally means "flower cards."  The word “hanafuda” refers to the cards themselves and the games played with them.  And there are many hanafuda games.  Some people say there are as many kinds of games as there are players.

Hanafuda have an interesting origin.  Playing cards originated in China in the 9th century.  They spread through the Asian continent, and were carried to Egypt.  From there they made their way to Europe in the 14th century.  Along the way, the cards changed again and again.  During the mid-16th century, the European playing cards were introduced to Japan by the Portuguese.

These Portuguese playing cards and the gambling games they were used for became popular in Japan.  But in the 17th century, the Tokugawa shogunate banned these foreign cards.  While the cards were banned, the games were not, so people were able to get around the law by designing new cards.  Each time a style of card became too popular, it was banned and a new style took its place.  Eventually, the hanafuda were created.  They now look completely different from their Portuguese ancestors.

Today, hanafuda are popular outside Japan, too.  In Hawaii, the cards are sometimes made larger so that they are easier to hold.  The cards are called hanafuda, but the games sometimes go by different names, like Sakura or Higo-Bana.  In Korea the cards are known as hwatu, but the game is sometimes called Go-Stop.  And in Micronesia, the game is called Hanafuda, but it is a four-person game.  Hanafuda are unique in that everywhere people play with them, the rules and games are different.

Al Capone
That Al Capone's nickname was "Scarface" is well known, but few are familiar with how the gangster got his famous scars.  He didn't get them in a shootout with police or in a fight with other gangsters. And he didn't get them fighting in World War I, as he often told people.  No, he got them in a bar fight over a girl.

Let's go back to when Alphonse Gabriel Capone was just 14.  He often skipped school and got in trouble. He eventually dropped out of school altogether and tried making an honest living.  He tried working at a candy store, at a bowling alley and at a book bindery.  Deciding that kind of life was not for him, he joined a local gang.  Later, he was recruited to a higher-ranking gang, and when he was 18, he was hired as a bouncer at a mob-owned bar called the Harvard Inn.

One day, a short gangster named Frank Galluccio came to the Harvard Inn with his girlfriend, Maria, and his sister Lena.  Although Capone was working the door, he kept his eye on Lena all night.  Lena didn't like it and asked her brother to ask him to stop.  Galluccio spoke to Capone, but Capone didn't stop looking at her.  Later, Capone made a rude comment to Lena as she walked by.  Galluccio was furious and demanded an apology. When Capone refused to apologize, a fight broke out.  Since Galluccio was much shorter and smaller than Capone, he pulled out a knife and quickly slashed Capone in the face and neck three times.  Capone went down in a pool of blood.  He was rushed to the hospital and received dozens of stitches.

After Capone recovered from his injuries, Galluccio paid him a large sum of money and Capone agreed never to retaliate against him. Eventually, the two men even worked together.  But Capone's scars never went away.  It is said that he tried to cover them and that he never liked the nickname "Scarface."

Food Waste
Americans waste more than 40% of the food that is produced for human consumption. This comes at an annual cost of at least $100 billion. Meanwhile, more than 10% of Americans do not have enough to eat. Food rescue, also called food recovery, is the practice of safely retrieving edible food that would otherwise go to waste and distributing it to those in need.  In most cases, the rescued food is being saved from being thrown into a dumpster. In other cases, volunteers recover food on farms that would normally be plowed under. This recovered food is edible, but often not fit to be sold. For example, products that are at or past their “sell by” dates or are imperfect in any way — a bruised apple or day-old bread — are donated by grocery stores, food vendors, restaurants, and farmers markets. Other times, the food is in perfect condition, but restaurants may have made or ordered too much. Nationwide, numerous food rescue organizations, such as Food Rescue, Feeding America and Hidden Harvest, pick up and deliver this rescued food using refrigerated trucks. They work with local agencies, like food banks, food pantries or soup kitchens, that serve people of low and no income.  These food rescue programs serve a great need because they offer healthy food to the hungry who may not meet the application requirements of state food-assistance programs.

Cats' Whiskers
Look at any drawing of a cat and you'll see whiskers on his upper lip.  But if you look closer at a real cat, you'll see smaller sets of whiskers in the eyebrow area, along the chin, and near the feet.  These whiskers aren't just cute.  They serve an important function.
Each whisker is supersensitive, and each comes out of a follicle, which is a sac that holds the hair.  These follicles are deep and have lots of nerve endings which send messages to the brain that help the cat judge distance and space.  And these whiskers are controlled by a complex set of muscles.  Together, the whiskers, muscles and nerves work like a GPS and radar system for the cat.  Thanks to his whiskers, a cat can detect what’s around him.  In fact, even a blind cat is able to navigate rooms very well.  That's why you should never cut a cat's whiskers.  A cat with cut whiskers is like a person wearing a blindfold, and he will get disoriented and scared.

The cat's whiskers can also send us humans messages.  For example, when the whiskers are sticking straight out from the sides of the cat's head, we know he is relaxed.  When the cat's whiskers are pressed forward, we know he is curious or in hunting mode.  And when the whiskers are pressed back toward the face, he is nervous or upset. So the next time you see a cat, take a good look at his whiskers.  You might save yourself from getting scratched.

An Underwater Hotel

Hotels above ground are a dime a dozen, but if you're looking for a truly unique vacation experience, then dive into an underwater hotel.  Jules' Undersea Lodge was one of the world's first underwater hotels, and it is the only one in the U.S.  It was originally built in the early 1970s as a research lab off the coast of Puerto Rico, but it was relocated to Key Largo, Florida, and has been offering rooms to guests since 1986.  If you are not a diver, you'll have to learn to scuba dive before you can enter the hotel, as the hotel's entrance is 21 feet under the water on the sea floor. MOBA

If you love art, you are surely familiar with many of the world's most celebrated artists, such as da Vinci, Monet, and Picasso.  You may have even visited great museums like the Louvre in Paris or New York's MoMA.  But I'll bet few of you know about a unique gallery in the Boston area called MOBA.  MOBA stands for the Museum of Bad Art.  Established in 1994, it is a privately owned museum whose stated aim is "to celebrate the labor of artists whose work would be displayed and appreciated in no other forum."  But that doesn't mean just any bad piece will be accepted.  When choosing which works to include, the museum curator has two criteria -- the work must not be boring and the artist's intent must be sincere.  Each painting or sculpture is presented with a descriptive narrative which includes the name of the artist, the medium used, the size of the piece, a description of how the piece was acquired, and an analysis of the work's possible intention or symbolism. MOBA maintains a website as well as three galleries, all in the Boston, MA, area.  MOBA's collection is made up of about 600 pieces, but due to limited exhibition space, only about 50 to 70 are shown at a time.  MOBA has received quite a bit of media attention, and The Times of London has recognized MOBA as one of the 50 greatest museums in the world.  MOBA has even inspired an event halfway around the world called MOPBA (the Museum of Particularly Bad Art) held annually in Melbourne, Australia.
