MACY'S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE

Thanksgiving Day started as a harvest festival way back in the 1600s.  Today, American families continue this tradition. On Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday in November, families gather together, have a big turkey dinner, and reflect on what they are thankful for. But Thanksgiving has taken on another role — it marks the beginning of the holiday season.  And one big symbol of the holiday season is Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Macy's is a big department store that was founded in 1858.  The company has held it's annual parade in New York City since 1924.  During the parade, which starts at 9:00 a.m. and lasts three hours, marching bands, floats, and floating stages with famous entertainers on board wind their way through the streets of Manhattan. The parade ends with the Santa Claus float.  But the most famous part of the parade is the giant balloons.

The first balloon was Felix the Cat, and he flew over the parade in 1931.  Since then, more and more balloons have been added.  There are smaller novelty balloons, and there are full-sized character balloons.  And in 2005, the parade added a third class of balloons — special balloons made by contemporary artists.  They call this exhibit the "Blue Sky Gallery,"  and this year it features a balloon by the Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama!
People come from all over the U.S. and around the world to see the famous parade.  If you plan to attend the parade, you'll want to go early because approximately 3.5 million people attend the event.  You'll want to get there by 6:00 at the latest.  It's almost always cold in New York on Thanksgiving, so you'd better bundle up!  And you won't want to leave your spot, so be sure to bring snacks and hot drinks. If you're prepared, you'll really be able to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience!
