Alcatraz Island is a small island located in the San Francisco Bay.  It is only 180 meters long and is about 40 meters high.  It's nicknamed "The Rock" because it's so rocky. The island is famous because from 1934 to 1963 the US operated a federal prison there. That prison held some of the most notorious criminals in American history, including Al Capone and James "Whitey" Bulger.  No one ever successfully escaped from Alcatraz, though many tried and several died in those attempts.
That's not all the island is famous for. It is also said to be haunted.  While the prison was in operation, many prisoners reported supernatural experiences. Some saw ghosts or floating blue lights; others heard people whispering or moaning; others heard the clanging of chains. At first the guards didn't believe the prisoners' claims, but then the guards themselves began to experience unusual activity.  Some guards noticed that certain areas of the prison were particularly cold, or they felt someone's hands on them, or they heard crying in the night.  There were mysterious, unexplained deaths at the prison, too.

The island's eerie reputation predates the prison.  Native Americans long ago spoke of the evil spirits on the island, and early explorers said it had a disturbing atmosphere.  People who go there say they can feel the dark power of the island.  Even so, more than a million people visit this island that some paranormal investigators have called one of the most haunted places on earth.
