Repair Cafes

When something breaks, most of us throw it away and buy a new one.  That means a lot of slightly broken items end up in the landfill.  It also means we spend money buying a whole new electrical appliance, article of clothing, piece of furniture or whatever the item may be.  But it wasn't always like that.  Our grandparents used to repair things themselves whenever possible, and when they couldn't do it themselves, they had them repaired.  These days, few people do either

Why don't we repair things ourselves?  For one thing,  few of us know how to fix things, especially electrical appliances or electronic devices.  And even if we do, many items are made in a way that makes repairing them difficult or impossible.  They may require special tools to open the device, or parts may not be available in stores.  In those cases, we take the broken item to a repair shop, but we're often told that the item can't be fixed or that it would be cheaper to buy a new item than to have it repaired.  But perhaps we shouldn't give up on these items so easily..

Small groups of people in different cities around the world have decided that it's worth it to try to fix things, and they've started repair cafes. Repair cafes aren't coffee shops; they are workshops organized with the aim of helping people learn how to repair things themselves.  Usually they are held at a fixed location where tools and parts can be stored.  They are staffed by amateur repair people.  The customers bring their broken items — chairs, lamps, jewelry, vacuums, clothing, etc. — to the repair cafe.  But the repair people don't fix the items.  Instead, they show the customers how to fix the items themselves. One of the organizers of a repair cafe said, "Repair cafes won't completely solve the problem, but every item that is repaired is one less item in the landfill."
