Imagine that you are flying over a body of water.  What color is it?  You probably said blue because, as everyone knows, lakes, rivers and oceans are blue.  Well, most of them are.  There are also pink lakes, and Australia has several of them.  The most famous of these is Lake Hillier.  It's located on Middle Island off the coast of Western Australia.

Lake Hillier is a small lake.  It's only 600 meters long by 250 meters wide.  It was discovered by a British explorer named Matthew Flinders in 1802.  He took samples of water from the lake and found that it was saline, which means it contains salt. In fact, Lake Hillier is as saline as the Dead Sea, and for a few years in the early 20th century, salt was extracted from the lake.

Scientists don't fully understand what causes the unusual coloring of the lake, but they have found a few possible factors.  The first is a kind of microalgae found in the lake called Dunaliella salina.  This kind of algae produces carotenoids, a pigment also found in carrots.  The second is actually several kinds of halophilic bacteria.  That means they are bacteria that love saline conditions.   The third is archaea, which are single-celled organisms that thrive in extreme conditions, including hot springs and saline lakes.  What these organisms have in common is that they are all pink, red or salmon-colored.

You may be wondering if it's safe to swim in Lake Hillier.  Yes, it is.  The salt water won't harm you, and neither will the organisms found in it.  But it's hard to get to, so if you want to see it or swim in it, you'll have to book a helicopter tour.
