Niagara Falls is a popular destination site for tourists from around the world.  The  group of three waterfalls are located on the Niagara River, which flows north connecting Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.  The Horseshoe Falls lie mostly on the Canadian side.  The American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls are on the American side.   Together, the falls have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world, and the Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America.  So it's impossible to imagine the falls ever stopping, but they did in 1969.

That year, a team from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was tasked with cleaning up the river bed.  Two major rockslides, one in 1931 and another in 1954, had caused a large amount of rock to collect at the base.  It was thought that the American Falls would stop flowing completely someday if the rocks were not removed.  So engineers built a 600-foot dam across the Niagara River.  Completed in June, this temporary dam diverted tons of water over the Horseshoe Falls, and the water on the American Falls stopped completely and it remained dry for several months.

You would think that tourism would be hurt by this, but thousands of visitors came to see the unusual sight.  While the riverbed was dry, engineers studied it and strengthened it, but in the end, they never did remove the rocks from the base of the falls, because it was judged to be too costly.  Finally, in November of that year, the engineers blew up their temporary dam, and the water rushed over the falls once again.

In January of this year, it was announced that the American Falls would be stopped again in order to repair two bridges that are in serious need of repairs.  The de-watering is expected to happen within the next few years and to last at least four months.
