Burmese Pythons in Florida

Burmese pythons are giant snakes native to Asia. Some can grow to over 20 feet long. They're non-venomous, but they have rows of razor-sharp teeth. And they are constrictors, which means that they wrap themselves around their prey, squeeze and suffocate it, and then swallow it whole. Burmese pythons have been known to strangle alligators and swallow deer.  And now Florida is infested with thousands of them.

Why are there so many Burmese pythons in Florida?  The theory is that it started in 1992, when Hurricane Andrew struck south Florida.  At that time, a pet reptile breeding facility was destroyed, and the baby Burmese pythons were blown into the swamps by the strong winds.  The survivors grew up and started breeding. Females of the species can lay dozens of eggs at a time, and it has no natural predators in Florida. Experts estimate that 100,000 Burmese pythons live in the Everglades National Park today.

These snakes are non-native, invasive creatures that pose a threat to humans and native wildlife that live in the marsh.  They are so good at killing rabbits, foxes, wading birds and other warm-blooded animals that other native predators — including panthers, raptors, alligators and bobcats — have trouble competing with them for food.  That's why the government started the Python Elimination Program in March 2017.  The participants in the python hunt are given instruction first.  Hunters are paid an hourly wage and get $50 for each snake that is at least 4 feet long.  They receive a bonus for longer snakes and for snakes found guarding a nest full of eggs.  In May 2018, the 1000th Burmese python was killed .
