Watching fireworks on the Fourth of July is an American tradition. The first Independence Day fireworks display was held in Philadelphia in 1777, and to this day, small towns and big cities across America hold impressive pyrotechnics displays to celebrate the holiday. Where it's legal, and sometimes even where it is not, many Americans buy fireworks for personal use to set off during their family Fourth of July celebrations.  For Americans, the Fourth just wouldn't be the same without them.

But however closely associated with the American holiday fireworks may be,  they aren't an American invention. They have been used during celebrations in China for hundreds of years. The earliest pyrotechnic devices are thought to have been used as long as 2000 years ago, but the earliest documented use of fireworks was in the 7th century. Back then firecrackers were believed to scare off evil spirits, so they were used at weddings and other events and during festivals, including the New Year Festival and the Moon Festival.

So how did fireworks get from China to the New World?  The made their way via the Silk Road, which opened up trade for various things.  When the Mongols traveled to Europe in the 13th century, the use of gunpowder and fireworks spread. They both became part of official celebrations in Europe, and later America.

Today, over 200 million pounds of fireworks are used in America each year. Some fireworks are produced by American companies, but most are still imported from China.  According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, 207.5 million pounds of fireworks were purchased for use in the US in 2012, with only 6.7 million coming from American manufacturers. That means 96% of the fireworks Americans use, including those used to celebrate the most American of all holidays, come from China, where they are still made by hand.
