Have you ever heard of Blue Zones?  That is what Dan Buettner calls the five areas in the world where the residents live the longest.  These areas are Sardinia, Italy; Icaria, Greece; Loma Linda, California; Nicoya, Costa Rica; and Okinawa, Japan.

How were these Blue Zones determined?  The idea of “Blue Zones” developed from the demographic work done by Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain.  They identified Sardinia, Italy, as the region of the world with the highest concentration of male centenarians, or people 100 years old or older. While doing their research there, they drew blue circles on a map to highlight the villages with extreme longevity,  so they began to call the area inside the circle the “Blue Zone.”

Buettner built on their demographic work and identified longevity hotspots around the world.  Then he looked for clues as to why people in those areas live so long and stay healthy far into old age.  He reported his findings in his cover story for National Geographic Magazine's November 2005 edition, "Secrets of Long Life."  Since then, Buettner has published best-selling books on the topic, including The Blue Zones and The Blue Zones Solution.  In addition, he has appeared on TV and given a TED talk on the topic.

So what are his findings?  According to Buettner, people in the Blue Zones share nine specific traits. These include getting moderate physical activity regularly, eating a plant-based diet, and having an active social life.  To find out the other six, you'll have to read his books or go to www.bluezones.com.
