The Taste of Chicago

Chicago is a great city with lots of things to do year round, but one of the biggest summer attractions is the Taste of Chicago.  Known by the locals simple as "The Taste," this free, outdoor event is Chicago's biggest festival and the world's largest food festival.

The Taste was born in 1980 when a group of restauranteurs convinced the mayor to hold a one-day food festival on Michigan Avenue. That first festival was a huge success.  Organizers had hoped to attract 75,000 people, but over 250,000 people attended.

The following year, in 1981, the festival was moved to accommodate all of the attendees. Grant Park was chosen as the location because it is located downtown on the city's magnificent lakefront and because it is easily accessible to public transportation and parking.  That year, the event was extended to ten days, and more restaurants and several musical performances were added.  The Taste was so popular that many other cities started their own Taste-like festivals, including the Taste of Denver, the Taste in Dallas, the Bite in Portland, and the Taste of the Danforth in Toronto.

By 2005, the ten-day event was attracting over 3 million people per year, but in 2012, the event was shortened to just five days.  Now, over a million people come each year.  Some come for the musical acts, including local artists and nationally known artists of various genres, that perform at the Petrillo Music Shell and on the Bud Light Stage.  But it's safe to say that the main attraction is the great Chicago food, like Chicago-style pizza, Chicago hot dogs, barbecued ribs, Polish sausage, and Eli's famous cheesecake.

The 2018 Taste of Chicago will take place from Wednesday, July 11th,  through Sunday, July 15th.
