Valentine's Day in the U.S.

Valentine’s Day in the U.S. is very different from Valentine's Day in Japan, where traditionally girls give chocolate to boys.  In the U.S., it's usually a gift exchange between sweethearts, and the gift isn't always chocolate.  The types of gifts and Valentine's celebrations vary depending on how old the lovebirds are.

Elementary school kids usually celebrate Valentine's Day at school. They have a little party at the end of the day and give each other cards called "valentines."  They always bring enough valentines for everyone in the class, including the teacher.   These cards are usually cute or have funny sayings on them.  For kids this age, Valentine's Day is about friendship, not romance.

In junior high or high school, kids may have a boyfriend or girlfriend.  If they do, they may buy a small gift, usually some kind of candy, for that person.  It doesn't have to be chocolate.  It can be whatever that person likes.  And it doesn't have to be candy.  It can be anything, but candy is cheap and students don't have a lot of money, so candy is common.

People in their twenties who have a steady boyfriend or girlfriend often go to a special restaurant for Valentine's Day.  It's a special occasion, so they splurge on steak or lobster or sushi and a bottle of champagne.  They may also exchange gifts.  Again, the gifts don't have to be chocolate.  A guy might give his girlfriend a piece of jewelry, a scarf, perfume, or a stuffed animal.  A girl might give her guy a hat, a watch, a wallet, or a CD.  It completely depends on what the special someone likes.

Married couples usually celebrate Valentine's Day, too.  Like unmarried couples in their twenties, married couples may go out for dinner to celebrate.  Some exchange gifts, and some don't, but most couples, even those with kids, at least give each other a card.  If they've been married for a long time, they may have a Valentine's Day routine.  For example, the husband always buys his wife red roses and she always makes him his favorite meal.

As you can see, it's hard to say exactly what people do on Valentine's Day. There is no one right way to celebrate.  And the only wrong way is to forget your special someone!
